A simple play about finding that which was lost and based on the parable Jesus told his disciples in St. Luke 15.
Andrea is a member of a church, but lost. She is preparing to visit her church’s Annual Penny Drive when one of her coins gets lost. She searches relentlessly for it and even drafts her little daughter, Pastor and His wife into the search. She finds the coin almost at the point where she would give up. God uses this to draw a parallel to her own life and the determination of her pastor coupled with the experience of finding the coin will lead her home.
Cast: 1 male, 4 females.

SCENE 1.
(LIGHTS UP)
(The stage opens with Andrea making final touches on her house as she tries to tidy up the house in the time so that she can get to the Penny Drive at church.)
(She is sweeping & humming)
ANDREA: Mmmm…..La la la. (pause) That seems to be it (as she puts the broom / mop
away). Finally done. (She sits & rests for a while). Now where did I put that jar of
coins?
(She pauses & ponders trying to remember she had placed the jar of coins.
(She then exits the stage & returns with the jar of coins in her hands.
She empties the jar and begins to count. Halfway through counting the phone begins to ring.
Still holding some coins in her hand she tries to answer the phone)
ANDREA: Hello, oh hi Reverend Simms, how are you doing; that’s good to hear. So
what do I owe this courtesy call? Oh you were wondering if I needed a lift to the Penny Drive at church. So wouldn’t that be a bit out of your way……….. (Pause)…..Alright then I guess I’ll see you in half hour.
(As she tries to put the phone back on the hook; still holding the coins in her hand, one of the coins fall to the floor and rolls away, so quickly that Andrea did not get a chance to see where it went).
(Andrea finally put the telephone on the hook and starts to look for the coin).
ANDREA: Now where did that coin go? (She begins to move the furniture). Mmmm
(sigh)…when it rains it pours. Why now God? Why now God? (She calls her
daughter Sarah to help her to look for the coin). Sarah…Sarah…Sarah sweetie
please come help mommy look for something.
(Sarah enters.
SARAH: What did you loose this time mom?
ANDREA: One of my coins is somewhere in this room. Can you help me find it?
SARAH: Do I have a choice?
ANDREA: Sure you do honey…you can move out of my house.
(Sarah sighs and begins to help her mother to look for the coin.
Andrea and Sarah look high and low for the coin moving every thing that comes across their path). (As they continue to look there is a knock at the door.)
ANDREA: Who could that be at this time of the day? (She stops searching for a second
to answer the door). Oh, Reverend and Grace you’re here.
REV: Yes, we’re happy to see you too.
ANDREA: Is it time already?
REV. SIMMS: Don’t tell me that you forgot.
ANDREA: Oh no I just lost track of the time. Cmon in. I just cant believe its half hour since we spoke on the phone.
(She stands aside and allows them to enter)
REV. SIMMS.: Time sure flies when you’re having fun.
ANDREA: Rev, Grace you’d never believe what happened to me.
REV. SIMMS: (excited) You got engaged.
ANDREA: No! Here I was this morning getting everything ready for the penny drive
when one of my coins fell to the floor and rolled away. Since then I have been looking for that coin and still it is nowhere to be found. I really need to find that coin before I leave.
GRACE: What is so special about this coin?
ANDREA: I don’t know…it just is.
GRACE: Well, don’t you have many more that you could carry with you?
ANDREA: Yes but I want to carry this one as well. I have been saving these coins all
year and I cannot afford for one to get lost now.
GRACE: I don’t know why this coin is so important to you, but because we need to be
on our way I’ll help you to look for it. (PAUSE) Come Rev come help us look.
(Reverend Simms and Grace start to help Andrea to look for the coin moving furniture here and there).
REV. SIMMS: So Andrea how have you been doing?
ANDREA: I’m fine Rev. Why do you ask?
REV. SIMMS: It’s been a while since I’ve seen you at church….you’ve become a
stranger lately. If I didn’t know better I’d start to think that you’d forgotten us.
ANDREA: Mmmm (Sigh)... So because I’ve not been at church in a while it’s ok for you to start assuming the worst. Judge not lest ye be judged, isn’t that what the good book says
REV. SIMMS: Don’t get me wrong Andrea I’m not trying to judge you. It’s just that I’m concerned.
ANDREA: I appreciate your concern…but its not necessary.
REV. SIMMS: Should I then just stand by and watch one of the members of my flocks go astray.
ANDREA: (Beginning to get very defensive) Oh…so now I’ve gone a stray.
REV. SIMMS: Don’t get me wrong sister.
ANDREA: Sorry to disappoint you pastor but I am not lost so there is no need for your concern….
REV. SIMMS: You’re missing the point….
ANDREA: …And by the way don’t you have many more persons to worry about? Stop wasting your time on me cause I am quite ok.
REV. SIMMS: Denying the truth does not change the fact that it still exists.
ANDREA: What truth are we talking about?
REV. SIMMS: Andrea you and I know that things have not been so well with you lately.
ANDREA: You and I know what?
REV. SIMMS: There have been rumors, people are talking and I think that this is cause for concern.
