Amazing Stories and Insights Behind the Great African-American Hymns and Black Spirituals.

~~~ IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL ~~~
Though this song was written in the midst of sorrow, the words brought solace to Horatio Stafford (the writer) at a time when he did not know where else to find peace. The words of this timeless song still speak eternal hope to all believers, no matter what the pain, hurt, or loss. We still have God's assurance that He is with us and there is no reason to fear. We can still say, "It is well with my soul."
HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW
"Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows." (Matthew 10:29-31)
This familiar passage of scripture may have been the true inspiration behind this popular church song. But it was the faith of a seriously ill woman that led Civilla D. Martin to pen the hymn in the early 1900s.
