Theatre is the oldest form of dramatic storytelling, and many still consider it the most electrifying.
Nothing beats the intensity of actors sharing the same air as the audience. The laughs and gasps and tears happen live. On the spot...but Great Plays are Written before they are performed and somebody has to write them. You are here, because you want to be counted among those who write...and write well.
"A play will not soar in performance unless it's great on the page. This 15-Week Online Course will teach you how to tell a story that is theatrical and produce-able from a Christian perspective, as well as such playwriting craft elements as structure, plot, dialogue, setting, theme, scene development, and format. You will also learn where you can market your work."
Whether you seek to write skits, one-acts or full-lengths, traditional or experimental, this is where you will learn to do it, as I will show you how to write plays that will bless audiences and keep them asking and coming back for more.
Heart of a Christian Playwright Ministries is dedicated to teaching you the fundamentals of Christian Playwriting in Fifteen (15) Weeks. With the knowledge you gain from this Course you will fully understand the techniques involved in taking a play from merely a concept to a finished draft. Using a balance of lectures and weekly assignments/exercises, this Course will give you a firm grounding in all the basics of Christian playwriting. Everything is presented in a clear, straightforward manner with one guarantee...If I can't teach you to write a good Christian play then maybe this is not the call you have on your life.
I'm very excited about this ministry and honored that God has given me the opportunity to play such a great role in the development and advancement of drama in the church.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1. Q. Will this Online Course allow me to move at my own pace?
A. It is possible but not recommended. The course is designed for you to receive 1 Lecture with 1 Assignment per week. This will help to instill the discipline of writing everyday or every week and meeting deadlines, but if the assignments are late, then automatically the lecture that follows will be late and in essence you would be moving at your own pace.
2. Q. Will there be any video conferencing?
A. No. It’s a simple course, which is why it’s so cheap : ). The lectures are delivered via email as a PDF attachment. Once you submit your assignment for that lecture another one will be sent. You will need no more than 10 - 15 minutes a day for at least 4-5 days a week to complete this course.
3. Q. How much of each topic will be covered.
A. I will be dealing with the fundamentals or basic structure of playwriting. It is not enough to fill out a 200 page book on playwriting, but it is enough to write good, quality Christian Plays.
4. Q. Is there a specific start and end date?
A. No. Your lessons begin the moment you sign up and end when you receive feedback on your last assignment.
5. Q. Am I able to work at my own pace?
A. See answer to question 1.
6. Q. How many hours a week is estimated to stay at the one assignment per week pace?
A. See answer to question 2.
7. Q. How is feedback given and will my work be read and responded to by other classmates?
A. The lectures will be delivered by email as a PDF attachment. The assignments are to be sent to a given email address as a word attachment. I will use the tracking utility to make notes and suggestions and this will be sent back to you also via email. I want the focus for this 15 weeks to be on you as a writer, so I would not want to add any additional strain by making it a part of the course to read and comment on other students work. That can prove to be a very tedious task.
8. Q. Is this class a new offering or has it been taught before?
A. I started this course back in 2005 and had 2 wonderful success stories. See Mary's Journey & The Gift. It became increasingly difficult to manage as I was still working full time so I discontinued the course and offered the lectures as a book, which did well over the years. After receiving so many emails about what to do and how to do it, I decided that I would revise the lectures and start again with minor modifications.
9. Q. How does it compare to a Gotham Playwriting Course?
A. I am a Graduate of Level I at Gotham. The course is costly, but the experience was good. They had interactive sessions where Students met and talked once a week and we had to read and comment on each others work....which was a lot of work as there were 15 students. Having to read 15 full length plays and comment was no walk in the park. What I found though was that the basic or fundamental aspects of playwriting remains the same whether you read a book or do a course, it is just offered in different ways. Everything I have learnt over the years was taken into consideration preparing these notes, in its most condense form, coupled with a Christian perspective --and that is what sets this apart from a General course on writing plays.

Welcome
We may be familiar with lots of impromptu productions put on at our church, or a local fundraising production with a ‘on the spot’ storyline, and a nice combination of bad and good enough acting. My problem with this is, when we were a part of the world, we put greater effort into what we did. Why then would we make less effort now that we are a part of God’s family?
I am hoping that as we seek to be agents of change, we are prepared to go that extra mile. I heard once that a good Christian is not the one who knows how to do good, but the one who knows how to do good and do it consistently.
On that note, welcome to the Online Christian Playwriting Course. This is where we try to take you from the ‘on the spot’ type of productions to writing good, quality Christian Plays that will be just as colorful as the Parables Jesus used to teach Truth.
Hopefully your experiences in the past may have at least one memorable play that had a powerful impact or made some impression on your life; one with memorable characters and a realistic plot that you could identify with. I want you to just take a little time out and consider that one Christian Play that you’ve seen in the past, that left its mark, so to speak. If you are unable to pin-point an experience like this at your church, then maybe you should consider a play you have seen somewhere else or even watched on DVD.
Think about it for a while.
The advent of Christian Drama has grown tremendously over the years; so much so that Christian Playwriting has been fully recognized as a full time ministry, just as writing novels and screenplays. I am presently writing Christian Plays as a full time ministry and still I find that the demand for quality plays is far greater than the supply. It’s a fantastic
opportunity to be able to do what you love and be paid as a Professional Christian Playwright. Fact is, more and more churches are seeking good quality Christian Plays to produce, which simply means, there is not enough writers.
I am happy for this growth and am even happier that Heart of a Christian Playwright has this opportunity to present this class in the simplest form that will allow people, even teenagers, who want to specifically focus on Christian Based Plays to do so. Otherwise, as I have done, you would have to spend hundreds to do a playwriting class that is
more general and not specifically designed for Christians.
In our ever changing world, Christian Plays have become a very powerful tool in witnessing for Christ. People’s lives have been changed by watching stories unfold onstage, being involved emotionally as characters strive to achieve their goals and feeling sympathy when the obstacles are met. Our entire being become engaged when witnessing a well written Christian Play unfolding before our eyes.
These are the plays we want to write. These are the plays that you should be willing to make the sacrifice to learn to write…the prayer of my heart is that God will teach us; yes us…the best way possible to tell stories that can change the lives of every single audience member who watches.
ASSIGNMENT # 1 (Week One)
For this week, I want you to write about your experience with one play that you’ve seen. Tell us why certain parts of the play are still fresh in your mind. Tell us how you as an individual were affected by the message that it carried, tell us everything that there is to tell about how you felt, the impact it had on your life, how you connected with the
characters.
When you are through, lay your writing aside for a day, then come back to it. Revise your piece and email it to cleveland@christianplaywright.org for review.
