Mary's Journey
This is a remarkable play that tells a very familiar story in a fresh, new way.
We know the journey our Saviour Jesus Christ took from the moment of his physical conception to the moment of his physical death. But hardly do we see this story through the eyes of the people who were close to him.
The Story....
Several Actors from the Wildwood Bible Church has taken up the challenge to present the story of Christ from birth to death...but this journey will prove to be an even greater challenge for each of these characters, especially Marsha who portrays the role of Jesus' mother, Mary. They will face more than just grasping the traits of their individual characters....they will encounter a level of conviction in their own lives that will cause a remarkable change.
The Setting...
This play takes place in a contemporary setting on the stage at Wildwood Bible Church, somewhere in “farm country”.

Sample Scenes
GABRIEL: (marches in reading his script) Greetings Mary, you are highly favored. The Lord is with you.
MARY: (Drops to her knees, frightened at the angel’s appearance)
Jon reacts in amazement at what he’s seeing. Hank is looking at his script every few words.
GABRIEL: Do not be afraid, Mary you have found favor with God. You’re going to become pregnant and have a son, and you are to name him Jesus.
(pacing militarily and gesticulating with his arms and hands like a general)
GABRIEL: He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.
(pauses.. reads script)
GABRIEL: The Lord God is going to give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever: andhiskingdomwillneverend.
MARY: How will this be since I am ……
JON: STOP OK lets stop there. I think I see where we are. First I see you’re not entirely off book yet. You guys…. We only have 3 weeks left. Can’t you do it without the script?
MARSHA: Almost
HANK: Nope.
JON: No?
HANK Well, I’ve been too busy with finals and chasin’ “donkeys” to memorize my lines.
JON: Well, can you make that a priority?
HANK: Yeah, I s’pose.
JON: OK. So for now – someone can be a prompter …. Uh……
KAYLA: I can do that!
JON: Thanks. So put down your scripts and let’s try this again, only this time try to be a little more relaxed – conversational. And Hank, bend your knees or you ‘re going pass out up here.
HANK: Be relaxed. Bend my knees—be relaxed.
Hank begins bobbing up and down bending his knees and walking a bit like a chicken
JON Hank You’re an arch angel. Not a chicken. Think Angel – just arriving from heaven with “really happy news.”
HANK (thinks a sec) OK
Hank spreads his wings, flaps and struts a bit. Trying to think relaxed angel. Circles and swoops around etc.
JON: (drop jawed at hank ) What are you doing?
HANK: Trying to get the feeling of a relaxed angel just flying in from heaven with “really happy news”..
Giggling on stage – especially Julie who’s been watching Hank’s every move
JON: He’s not an airplane. He’s an arch angel.
HANK: Yeah, I know! High ranking but relaxed Arch Angel, Flying in from Heaven with a “really happy message” from God. But relaxed.
Hank suddenly Silly and Swoops in on MARY: – arms outstretched high like a jubilant Dracula
HANK: Hail !! Mary
MARSHA: Oh. (startled jumps back a bit)
HANK: Favored of God !
MARSHA: Hank !– Be serious!
JON: And No airplanes. Please !
HANK: – But how do I startle her without – well startling her.
Julie is Giggling
MARSHA: shhhhh
JON: (rolls his eyes)
Marsha looks around at the set for a better place to be in the scene.
MARSHA: Jon? What should Mary be doing out here anyway. Do you want her to see him coming or not?
HANK: Yeah, do I sneak up on her and turn my bright lights on.
JON: No.
HANK: Whoa, Mary you are highly favored girl.
JON: It’s not….
HANK: Yo! MARY:! What’s up girl?
Marsha’s trying not to laugh and Jon is trying not to cry.
MARSHA: Hank! Be serious. We gotta work on this now.
Hank is still feeling a bit silly and playing with the part.
HANK: Oooo kay I’m just trying to get into character. You know angelic but relaxed. You try it ! It’s harder than it sounds.
Marsha turns her back to him shaking her head stifling a laugh and tries to ready herself
JON: Moving ooooon. Marsha – lets put Mary here – working in her garden or something and Hank. !. please….
HANK: (nodding) Yeah ok …… but I’m just not getting the angelic but relaxed thing.
JON (big sigh) You’re not.
HANK: No. How can you be Angelic but still be relaxed and casual.
JON: Not casual. Relaxed. He’s comfortable. Gabriel is God’s messenger and this is not his first visit to earth. He’s used to doing this.
HANK: Well I’m not.
JON: That’s why it’s called acting. And he’s bringing exciting news which is going to change the world forever.
HANK: Yeah I get that part.
JON: But he’s not giddy about it. Just think about what he’s telling her. This is exciting news but it’s also going to change her whole life. And he doesn’t want to frighten the wits out of her - she’s only a teenager. Besides he might be a bit curious about this girl God has chosen. Play with that a little (a beat) just a little.
Hank starts trying to get “comfortable and curious” and angelic ….
HANK: (muttering under his breath) Comfortable, curious and angelic. Right.
JON: And Marsha, God chose Mary for a really awesome job so we can be fairly certain that she’s not (a beat) a fragile waif. She’s probably thoughtful, kind, you know the virtuous woman type. Not easily flustered.
Crash - set trouble wall falls over. Eva and June collide over something. and have a glaring reaction, while others are trying to put the set back up.
JON: (jumps out of his skin and turns to watch the chaos in amazement)
MARSHA: Anyway …. I think she must have been very dedicated and innocent.
JON: Yes, but she has great faith - so meeting an angel might be startling at first, but then she probably warms up and just talks with him with wonder and respect.
Jon glances over at the going on with Eva and June every once in a while. Hank is still being comfortable, angelic, curious etc.
Marsha is waiting for him to finish his thought.
MARSHA: Just ignore them.
JON: What? OH… I mean …Mary probably accepts his presence and just believes him. Does that make sense?
HANK AND MARSHA: yes, um hmm
JON: Good, so why don’t you two go off stage somewhere and work on this for a bit and we’ll get back to it later tonight.
Crash - again
JON: (watches the chaos in amazement) Take five !!! Can’t we fix that thing?
Everyone starts to disperse immediately like kids let out of kindergarten Jon lets his script falls to the floor.
JON: (to the room at large) And then Can we get the shepherds up here next? Where’s the drinking fountain?
Lights going down , except spot on Jon.
JON: I think I need some aspirin. (Jon exits stage left.)
MARSHA and HANK are talking about where to go to rehearse.
