This play was written to honour the victims of Hurricane Katrina, especially those who were forced to flee their homes in New Orleans.

Katrina is not just the name of the hurricane that devastatingly swept through the U.S. Golf Coast…it is also the name of a person who has had her share of hurt in the past. Katrina Robinson lost her family, her home and almost her sanity to a society that continues to harbour the concept of racism below the surface of truth and honestly.

She is forced to live in a building that has laid in ruin for many years, but when the water starts to rise in the ‘pond city’, this ruin will serve as a shelter and home for seven additional characters i.e. A husband and his wife, A Social Worker and her soft-hearted sister, Two Ghetto youths (who adds humour to this play through their looting habits) and one Young Christian woman who has survived a lifetime of pain.

The Moral...

These characters will learn that God and God alone has the power to give...and also to take away and...

... no matter how hard and unbearable life gets…

...God is able to sustain and keep us and in doing so, He remoulds us into better vessels.

Sample Scene

LIGHTS UP.

Grub and Melvin peaks inside just as before.

GRUB: Clear.

MELVIN: Clear.

They disappear for a while, then reappear carrying a huge cardboard box.

Just as they’re about to exit to another room Katrina burst in.

KATRINA: Hey.

            They freeze in their tracks.

KATRINA: What do you have there?

GRUB: Nothing.

MELVIN: It’s just a box.

Katrina goes over to the box and pops the top to look inside.

She rolls her head and pulls away.

KATRINA: Guys, guys…this looting has to stop.

            Pause.

GRUB: He’s the looter…I just ‘find’ things.

            Paul enters.

PAUL: Hey, guys…whatcha got there.

KATRINA (surprised): Paul!?!

PAUL (ignorant to Katrina’s expression): Hey Kat…

Paul goes to the box. He pulls out one of the wine bottles  and exits.

KATRINA: I don’t believe this.

            Matilda enters quickly.

MATILDA: Hey guys, did you find any…

She sees Katrina, hands on her sides.

MATILDA: …body alive out there.

Matilda turns around and exits without waiting for a response.

Grub and Melvin places the box in a corner.

GRUB: I swear sir, madam…we did buy these. We have the receipt right….here.

Grub searches meticulously through his pockets a few times.

GRUB (looking at Katrina): Mel… please tells me you have the receipt.

MELVIN: Nope.

Grub searches through his pockets again and then perform a search on Melvin.

MELVIN: Hey.

            No receipt.

GRUB: We did buy them.

KATRINA: If you leave this house again, I’m going to Barr the door.

GRUB: No problem. Fair enough.

MELVIN: We don’t really want to go back out anyways.

            Melvin exits to another room.

KATRINA: Is the water still rising?

GRUB: Let’s just say the only evidence of houses down there are the roof…and there are people on the roof.

KATRINA: Oh my…

GRUB: Some helicopters are in and out moving some of the people, but the water is rising fast. I don’t think they all’s gonna make it.

CASSANDRA’S VOICE: We can pray.

Cassandra enters with a bible in her hands.

GRUB: Prayer ain’t worth a penny right now.

            Grub exits.

Cassandra goes to her little corner and opens her bible and starts to read.

Katrina watches her, shaking her head at Cassandra.

Cassandra looks up for a moment, and then buries her head in the bible.

The others enter one by one and after settling down, their eyes wonder in
            Cassandra’s direction.

Matilda watches for a moment, but obviously she can’t take it. She walks over
To Cassandra and hits the bible from her hand.

MATILDA: You got some nerve reading that book in here.

Cassandra casually picks the bible up and starts to read again.

Matilda is about to hit it again when Katrina holds her hand.

KATRINA: No.

PAUL: We all are entitled to our own beliefs.

MATILDA: Even so, God should not have a part in this. Hasn’t He done enough?

CASSANDRA: Why do we always believe that we are the victims? We brought this on ourselves.

MATILDA: So it’s my fault my house and everything I own is gone? It’s your fault your father is dead? Is that what you’re saying?

PAUL: Leave her alone, Matilda.

MATILDA: I’ll leave her alone when she stops bringing that book around me.

Matilda grabs the wine bottle from Paul and puts it to her head.

GRUB: Take it easy, girl.

CASSANDRA: There are things worst than a flood, or even death.

MATILDA: Whatever.

SUSAN: She’s right.

MATILDA: What do you know? All you do is sit around everyday and hush and feed your baby. Your husband does all the running around.

PAUL: Hey…understand yourself.

SUSAN: Our marriage experienced a Katrina last year when I had an affair.

            Paul sinks off into thought.
