ARE YOU WEARING A MASK?
Leslie has just turned twenty and she loves the Lord very much. She is loved and respected as a Vibrant and productive youth leader with 'Vibes.' She is the daughter of the Pastor of her church and they live in a stable home, or so it would seem.
Leslie meets Mark, and even though they have known each other since childhood, there seems to be a different kind of interest sparking between them that leads to choices...and with choices come consequences.
In Leslies perfect world, everyone is wearing a mask...and when the masks are revealed, the secrets that lie beneath threaten to destroy Leslie and everything she thought to be true....and even though the masks are eventually removed...it may just be too late to escape the consequences that follow.
This play deals with some very serious issues and highlights how the masks we wear can destroy our families, our ministry and our spiritual lives.

There is a knock at the door.

Leslie goes to answer it.
LESLIE: Yes who is it.
VOICE FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR: It’s me…Mark.
LESLIE: Who??
MARK: Mark I called earlier.
LESLIE: Oh..Mark.
She goes to open the door.
LESLIE: Wow…that was fast.. Didn’t you just call me.
MARK: Yeah…but when I called I was already in the neighborhood.
LESLIE: Is that so.
MARK: So aren’t you gonna invite me in.
LESLIE: Why? aren’t we just gonna talk…we can talk from here.
MARK: Lezz why you tripping like that.
LESLIE: Listen..No offense and all but my Parents aren’t here right now. Ok. And I’m not too keen on inviting people in when I’m home alone.
MARK: Ok, I understand that. But it’s not like I’m gonna do anything to you. All I want to do is sit and have a nice chat with you that’s all.
LESLIE: I don’t know about that.
MARK: Leslie, haven’t you known me for a long time now… and in all that time have I ever offended you in anyway.
LESLIE: Well no..but we have never been alone together either.
MARK: Lez, c’mon you know I don’t role like that. Your family knows me.
Leslie pause for a while to think and then she responds.
LESLIE: Ok, but only for five minutes… agreed.
MARK: I can work with that.
She invites him in… they sit in the sofa.
MARK: you know that’s what I respect about you… you are a girl who stands her ground.
LESLIE: Is that a fact.
MARK: Yeah, you don’t find many women like you anymore.
LESLIE: Ok… so what did you want to talk to me about… times a going.
MARK: Nothing much. I just wanted to see that pretty face of yours.
LESLIE: (jumping to her feet) Ok time to go.
MARK: Girl I’m just playing with you c’mon sit back down.
LESLIE: Don’t ever try anything like that again.
MARK: Aiight.
MARK: So how’s the lovely.. (instantly Leslie glances at him through the corner of her eyes) a mean how are you doing.
LESLIE: Good… you.
MARK: Oh me I couldn’t have been better.
Leslie sits quietly looking around the room.
MARK: Wasn’t church a blast Sunday… man your dad brought the house down.
LESLIE: I guess.
MARK: It’s messages like those that I really love…did you see how many people responded to the call. I felt so good just sitting there. I love it when God works.
LESLIE: Yeah…Mmmm.
MARK: Ok … Seriously ..are you ok… or are you just uncomfortable.
LESLIE: You think.
MARK: So what is it. Yes or no.
LESLIE: I think your five minutes are almost up.
MARK: Ok I get the message… I’m gonna go.
LESLIE: Thank God.
MARK: Woow.. Listen… I respect you and I respect your family so I’m gonna leave. But just so you know I don’t want anything from you. I just wanted to talk to you cause you seemed like a nice person to talk to. But I guess I was wrong… I’ll let myself out.
LESLIE: Mark…it’s not that I don’t trust you but… I’ve never really done anything like this so I’m a bit uncomfortable.
MARK: Ok I can understand that… anyway see you later…
LESLIE: Aiight.
(Mark exists the stage). (Leslie picks up a magazine and begins to read. No sooner had she begun reading the door opens. Mr. & Mrs. Jonas enter the stage).
LESLIE: Mom, dad your back…
MRS. JONAS: Yep.
LESLIE: So how was it?
MR. JONAS: Well it went better than I expected.
MRS. JONAS: Stop it Greg. Baby, it was great. It was so good your dad here even got up and sang.
LESLIE: Dad! Sing!
MR. JONAS: What…it happens.
LESLIE: You go dad.
MR. JONAS: While we’re on the subject. We passed Mark on our way in. What’s that about?
LESLIE: He just stopped by to say hi. Why?
MR. JONAS: Oh nothing.
LESLIE: Dad…. You never ask Questions for nothing. What is it?....(Pause) Nothing happened so you can rest easy.
MR. JONAS: Oh no baby girl it’s not like that, we trust you. In fact I was kinda glad when I saw him coming from here…
LESLIE: What are you saying dad?
MR. JONAS: You know I was beginning to worry about you. Ah mean girls your age are all up and about the guys. But you… well… let’s just say it looks hopeful.
MRS. JONAS: Greg.
MR. JONAS: What? Don’t tell me you don’t have your concerns.
MRS. JONAS: Well yeah, but its Leslie’s choice… not mine or yours.
MR. JONAS: Yeah but we’re getting old… we need to see some hope of grandchildren.
MRS. JONAS: Greg.
MR. JONAS: Baby girl you know I’m just kidding.
LESLIE: So you say dad.
MRS. JONAS: So how’s Mark doing?
LESLIE: Just same as when you had asked him.
MRS. JONAS: What?
LESLIE: Let’s face it. I know you two…. There is no way in this world that you are gonna see a young man leaving your house, especially when you weren’t there, and not interrogate him.
MR. JONAS: So what do you expect? We have to be responsible parents.
LESLIE: Dad I’m almost 20 years old. If I wanted to do anything I could have a long time ago.
MR. JONAS: We are not implying anything…
LESLIE: Well I hope not… you all should know me better than that.
MRS.JONAS: Ok that’s enough…break it up you two… Greg, remember you promised to fix the pipe in the kitchen for me. And you young lady, don’t you have a youth meeting to prepare for.
Mr. Jonas and Leslie exit the stage.
MRS. JONAS: Sometimes I think I have two children.
LIGHTS OUT.
